Connemara Single Malt
As a solid Scottish ‘Traditional’ single malt
whisky drinker, I have never really taken other Country’s single malts seriously,
that is until I was at an airport somewhere recently (Jersey I think) who were offering
an Irish Single Malt tasting session.
Not one to give an opportunity like this, I felt I
should suffer the Irish whiskey … there were 4 or 5 and they were average …
until I got to the Connemara. It looked
simple and innocent enough, but I have to say, my jaw dropped. It was just as good as many Scottish
equivalents – at least in my humble opinion.
It is a slightly peaty, sweet, honey flavoured with a somewhat complex after
taste, but extremely easy drinking. I
will certainly not hesitate to buy it again.
Enough of my ramblings … here is the Story from
Connemara Distillery itself. “Unique among Irish whiskeys, Connemara is the
only Irish Peated Single Malt Whiskey widely available today. Inspired by the
18th century art of drying malting barley over peat fires, Connemara® possesses
a distinct peaty flavour and aroma, instilling a delicate smokiness and smooth,
sweet taste. Its complex peat flavours and smooth, sweet malt taste make it a
truly unique Irish whiskey. Connemara is a highly decorated Irish whiskey
receiving over 20 medals in major spirits competitions since 2012.”
