Penderyn Whisky

Penderyn Whisky

I was amazed to find, on a trip to Wales, Welsh whisky being sold in a tourist shop, obviously this needed further investigation.  I was pleased to find that the distillery was open to the public so thought it rude not to have a look around.

It looked very profession, but let's face it, this was Wales and not Scotland so there was no competition when it came to taste ... surely ...

At the end of the tour, there was a short tasting and I was extremely surprised that despite my misgivings, they were very drinkable.

I have recently reminded myself of the experience when I found a bottle in Tesco, thinking that perhaps I was previously caught up in the moment, I thought I better try it again.  This was a bottle of the Celt, finished in ex-peated casks at 41% ABV.

On getting home and finding the right moment to try it - probably just after England beat Wales at rugby, I poured a dram (perhaps not the correct term for Welsh whiskey).  I have to say it was as good as I remembered.

It may not come out at the top of the Single Malt list in the World but it certainly isn't shabby and is certainly worth a try. It is sweet with smoke ... give it a try.

Here is what Penderyn distillery have to say about it  ...
Tasting Notes
Nose: Mild aromas of peat smoke, early morning at the rocky seaside and warm marmalade on toast all compete for our attention.
Palate: It begins with great sweetness before the smoky, slightly medicinal flavours descend.
Finish: Slight bitterness follows that leaves a long and lingering freshness in the mouth.
